16th July Dear Resident, During the summer months, sheds and garages often become targets for thieves looking to steal bicycles, tools, gardening equipment, and other valuable items. Taking a few simple precautions can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime. Crime Prevention Advice for Sheds and Garages 1. Improve Physical Security Fit good quality closed-shackle padlocks and hardened steel hasps.Upgrade weak shed doors with additional security hinges and hinge bolts.Consider installing a garage defender or ground anchor for up-and-over garage doors.Reinforce windows and vulnerable panels where possible.2. Secure Valuable Property Lock expensive tools, bicycles and machinery inside the shed or garage.Use chains and ground anchors to secure bikes, motorcycles, and larger equipment.Avoid leaving portable power tools visible through windows.Remove keys from vehicles and garden machinery, even when stored inside a locked garage.3. Mark and Register Property Security mark tools, bikes and equipment with a postcode or forensic marking product.Keep a detailed inventory including photographs, serial numbers, and receipts.Register valuable items on a recognised property database.4. Improve Lighting and Surveillance Install motion-activated security lighting around sheds, garages, and side access points.Consider CCTV or video doorbells that cover vulnerable areas.Trim hedges and shrubs that could provide cover for offenders.5. Prevent Easy Access Ensure side gates are locked and in good condition.Store ladders away securely so they cannot be used to gain access to buildings.Keep fences and boundaries well maintained.Do not leave tools or equipment unattended in gardens.6. Make Occupancy Appear Normal If away on holiday, ask trusted neighbours to keep an eye on your property.Use timer switches on internal lights when away.Avoid advertising holidays or extended absences on social media until you return.7. Lock Up Every Time Many thefts occur because sheds and garages are left unlocked during gardening, DIY, or outdoor activities.Make a habit of locking doors and windows even if you are only going inside the house briefly. If You See Suspicious Activity Report suspicious behaviour, unknown vehicles repeatedly visiting the area, or attempts to access properties to the police. In an emergency or if a crime is in progress, call 999.For non-emergency concerns, contact police on 101 or through your local force's online reporting system.Summer Security Reminder Lock it, light it, mark it and report it. A few minutes spent securing your shed or garage can prevent the loss of valuable property and help keep your community safe. Kind regards Trisha
